A behind-the-scenes look into our business and life featuring posts about the lovely couples we get to work with, beautiful weddings we are privileged to photograph, tips for planning your wedding and preparing for your marriage, things we are passionate about, fun projects and more!
Rain on your wedding day is good luck because it signifies that your marriage will last according to Hindu tradition. I have also heard it mean that you will have children, since rain waters the ground and lends to fertility. Fingers crossed that both of these hold true for Melissa and Jake. They are amazing individuals and will one day be amazing parents.
Jeremiah and I met Melissa on a rainy day in April for her Milwaukee County Zoo wedding. Her bridesmaids arrived dressed in a beautiful array of complimentary dresses and matching umbrellas. We headed into the basement of the Peck Welcome Center for Melissa to prepare for her wedding, while Jake and his boys were arriving at the zoo. Melissa’s bridesmaids kept her laughing the entire morning and us smiling.
Melissa took her place outside and waited for Jake for their first look. Jake opened his eyes, started to take a step forward and instantly had to wipe away the tears. He was truly in awe at the sight of Melissa and he hadn’t seen everything yet. It gave me chills!! I don’t know what was said or written in the cards, but they both lit up in excitement. Her bridesmaids also enjoyed watching a recording of the first look.
The rain and strong winds meant staying inside for most of the photos, but we made use of the gorgeous spaces in the Apes of Africa exhibit. Once again, I am so in love with the color palette for this wedding! Plus, this party was fun and hilarious. We were running a little behind schedule, but this group worked hard (and played hard) and we caught up very quickly. This meant more time for photos with Melissa and Jake exploring the rest of the exhibit and creating gorgeous images. Seriously, these two are adorable together!
We finished up photos and let the couple share some time together before the ceremony. Guests started to arrive and the bridal party lined up. Melissa’s uncle performed the ceremony and kept these two laughing with memories from their relationship and hopes for their future. The rain outside cast a beautiful glow through the windows that complimented the lights behind the couple and cast a perfect reflection on the floor.
I LOVE when couples can enjoy cocktail hour with their guests. Melissa and Jake had it even better and could also view the entire Apes of Africa exhibit during cocktail hour while enjoying delicious treats and making mold-a-ramas. The Peck Welcome Center was flipped during cocktail hour and provided space for dancing, mingling and enjoying delicious food stations.
I love that Melissa and Jake incorporated some of their love and personality into the day, especially with The Simpsons. Check out the amazing cake topper and card house Melissa and her dad made. Plus, the tiny animals and peacock feather elements were a great way to tie everything together. Melissa also changed into her reception dress in time to rock the dance floor with her amazing moves.
I always ask my brides a few questions before the wedding, so here’s what Melissa had to say.
How did you know that he was THE ONE for you? He makes me laugh harder than anyone else.
What’s the most memorable moment of your wedding planning process? I remember making a list of exactly what I wanted for a wedding dress then going with friends to try on the Disney dresses just for fun and falling in love with one that broke all the rules. I realized as we drove off that my favorite was the Princess Jasmine dress and that I used to dress as Princess Jasmine for several halloweens as a little girl. It was the one.
Any tips for other brides about the planning process? You and your fiancé don’t need to follow all the “rules”. We sure didn’t! It’s your wedding, have fun!
What do you feel is the most important thing about your wedding day? The most important thing is just that I get to be married to Jake when its over even if everything goes wrong.
